The main purpose of establishing this University was to upgrade the status of Physical Education by producing quality teachers and leaders through graduate and post-graduate courses. Three years Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) was started in 1957 and two years Master of Physical Education (MPE) in 1963. In 1980, the then college reached yet another milestone and became the first institution in India to have offered one-year programme of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Physical Education. Ph.D. programme in Physical Education was started in 1998. Students are also admitted for various certificate/diploma/PG Diploma courses in different disciplines of Physical Education and Sports.

The duration of the Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.E.) course was initially of three years. To bring it at par with other professional degree courses, as also match the International standards the duration of the course was extended to four years integrated course and the course was renamed as Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) Integrated. The National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) Western Regional Centre, Bhopal vide their Order No. WRC/5-6/6/90/2006/C-5370 dated 26th December 2006 accorded recognition to this course. The 2-years M.P.Ed. Degree Course also has recognition from the NCTE, Western Regional Centre, Bhopal vide their Order No. WRC/2-32/APWO 1960/214009/77/2005/7426 dated 16.9.2005.

Guru Nanak Dev University

Guru Nanak Dev University was established at Amritsar on November 24, 1969 to mark the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is both a residential and an affiliating university. In conceiving the future course of the University, the objectives enshrined in the Guru Nanak Dev University Act 1969, emphasised that the new University would make provision for imparting education and promoting research in the humanities, learned professions, sciences, especially of applied nature and technology

The University is successfully catering to twenty thousand students in various faculties at University Campuses and Constituent Colleges. Guru Nanak Dev University is the first University of the region which introduced on-line admissions to its courses, on-line counselling for State Level Admissions and Credit Based Evaluation System. All the results have been computerized and OMR (Optical Magnetic Recognition) system is being used to bring in more efficiency and transparency. It is again first for any University in the region to have computerized it examination and registration system. The students now have an all time access to their results through SMS service.

The University has risen to 16th rank in the top 50 universities of the country, as per recent survey conducted by ‘India Today’ and has achieved 11th Position, out of the 500 universities, in Publications in science. Gujarat Vidyapith

The Principal objective of the Vidyapith shall be to prepare through education, workers with character, ability, culture and conscientiousness necessary for the conduct of the movements connected with the regeneration of the country in accordance with the ideals given by Mahatma Gandhi.

The teachers and trustees of the Vidyapith shall restrict themselves to those means only which are not inconsistent with truth and non-violence and shall consciously strive to carry them out.

The teachers and trustees of the Vidyapith, as also all the institutions connected with it, shall regard untouchability as a blot on Hinduism, and shall strive to the best of their ability for its removal, and shall not exclude a boy or a girl for reason of his or her untouchability nor shall give him or her discriminatory treatment having once accorded admission to him or her.

The teachers and trustees of all the institutions connected with the Vidyapith shall regard hand-spinning as an essential part of the national regeneration movement and shall therefore spin regularly, except for unavoidable reasons and shall habitually wear khadi.

The mother tongue shall have principal place in the Vidyapith and shall be medium of instruction for all education. Explanation : Language other than Gujarati may be taught by the direct method.

The teaching of Hindi-Hindustani shall be compulsory in the curricula of the Vidyapith. Note : The Hindi-Hindustani means the language commonly spoken by the masses of the North, both, Hindu and Musalman, written in the Devnagari or the Persian script.

Vocational Training (Audyogic Shikshan) shall receive the same importance as intellectual education and only such occupations as are conducive to the nation shall be taught.

As the growth of the nation depends not on its cities but its villages, the bulk of the funds of the Vidyapith and large number of teachers shall be primarily employed in the propagation of national education (Rasthraposhak) in villages.

In laying down the priorities of education, the needs of the village-dwellers shall have principal consideration.

There shall be complete tolerance of all established religions in all institutions connected with the Vidyapith. For the spiritual development of the pupils, knowledge of religion shall be imparted in consonance with truth and non-violence.

For the development of a healthy nation, physical exercise and training in manual work shall be made compulsory in all the institutions connected with the Vidyapith.
